Imagine a quick, heart-healthy meal that’s simple to make and packed with nutrients from foods you might otherwise overlook throughout the day. It may sound too good to be true, but smoothies are a fantastic and delicious solution. They’re an effortless way to incorporate vegetables into your diet without requiring extensive preparation. Plus, for those with picky palates, smoothies can mask the taste and texture of veggies, making them a stealthy yet satisfying option.

By adding leafy greens like spinach, kale, chard, arugula, or collard greens, your smoothie becomes a nutritional powerhouse. These vegetables can be located at  almost every grocery store in the fresh or frozen sections, explore around and see what other vegetables or fruit you could put in a smoothie! These greens provide fiber, vitamin C, vitamin D, magnesium, and potassium, all of which support heart function and overall health. Your heart, the engine that circulates blood, oxygen, and nutrients, deserves this boost to stay strong and resilient.

Here’s a simple recipe to create a nutrient-rich smoothie that combines fruits, greens, and wholesome ingredients:

Powerhouse Green Smoothie

Ingredients (Makes 6-8 cups)

  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tbsp seeds (chia, sunflower, hemp, or ground flaxseed)
  • ¼ cup pitted dates (for sweetness; soak overnight if needed)
  • ½ cup nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts; soak overnight if needed)
  • 2-4 cups dark leafy greens (spinach, kale, chard, collard greens)
  • 2 cups fruit (berries, mango, peaches, cherries, etc., fresh or frozen)
  • 1-2 ripe bananas (fresh or frozen)

Directions

Pour the water into the blender. Add seeds, nuts, and dates. Add the greens and fruits, and bananas *and optional ingredients. Blend until smooth (1-3 minutes).  Enjoy right away or store in the fridge for up to three days!
