Wildfire Mitigation Work Near Tribal Properties

Thanks to the hard work of a crew from Phoenix School in Roseburg, a large area near Seven Feathers RV Resort in Canyonville has been treated to help mitigate or reduce impacts from wildfire. The work treated the area around the resort, as well as areas near the old tire shop, Jordan Creek, and Edie’s Lane.

The crew focused on creating 200 feet of defensible space around the structures by removing understory fuels littering the ground and pruning the lower branches of larger, mature trees. Oregon trees are quite resilient to fire, but are endangered when excessive fuels on the ground allow the fire to reach the crown of the trees, where it can do permanent damage and spread more quickly.

The work was made possible by a wildfire mitigation and defensible space grant from the Oregon High Education Coordinating Commission.
