Tribal Wood Products Used in Portland Construction Designs
Incense cedar wood harvested from Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians’ land has been used by two construction firms to create structures in Gresham and Portland.
ZGF, the architects who designed the new look for PDX, used Cow Creek Umpqua wood for an open barrier around the daycare facility in the La Plaza Esperanza Community Center, located in Gresham, Oregon (see photo to right).
Regarding the community center, ZGF’s website states: “The design of the indoor-outdoor preschool play area screen is inspired by the mountainous landscape to the east of Portland. The artistic approach to the screen design uses dynamic diagonal lines to create an uplifting and aspirational feeling as the wood trellis rises towards the sky. The scent of the Tribal-sourced incense cedar screen material also provides a delightful sensory experience for the users.”
Green Hammer Design, another construction firm, also utilized Cow Creek Umpqua incense cedar wood as part of thier work on Rose Villa Senior Living, a continuing care retirement community located in Portland, Oregon (see photo below).
