Diabetes and Heart Health

Heart health requires just as much attention as the rest of your body

Controlling your blood glucose (blood sugar) is critical for anyone affected by diabetes. Positive lifestyle changes can help manage or prevent cardiovascular disease, including heart attack or stroke.

Decrease Your Risk of Heart Disease

  • Work with your health care team
  • Keep track of your blood glucose (blood sugar), blood pressure levels, and weight. Let your health care team know if you see changes or trends of higher or lower results
  • Exercise regularly and make healthy food choices

Symptoms of Heart Disease

  • Shortness of breath, fainting, or near-fainting
  • Fluttering in your chest, chest pain, or feelings of tightness or pressure in your chest
  • Slow heartbeat, dizziness, pain in one or both arms, or a fast heartbeat not due to physical activity
  • Numbness or weakness in your legs
  • Neck, jaw, throat, back, or upper abdomen pain
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting

If you or someone you’re caring for has chest pain, shortness of breath, or is fainting, call 911 immediately
